Hope

“We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance
inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.”
I Thessalonians 1:3

Perhaps one of the greatest understatements I can make is to say that we are experiencing times of great despair and for so many a sense of hopelessness unlike any other time in our history.

I am very aware that most readers of this blog are believers so all the more reason that I should have agreement on this point.

The world, without God, is lost and without hope.

Certainly this planet has known difficult times before.

Some may have lived through the Great Depression, WWII and the Holocaust.

Centuries ago the planet was rocked by the Plague. More recently we have seen Tsunami’s, terror strikes, Hurricane Katrina, to name just a few.

It even seems there has been an escalation of hopelessness as we see marriage and the family redefined by our culture, gender confusion issues, mass shootings in our schools and elsewhere.

Crime, suicide, violence, and depression all seem to be rampant and people are looking in all the wrong places for answers. Our leaders have failed us, genuine solutions to severe problems seem to allude us and we try to numb our hopelessness through everything that gratifies the flesh.

The week’s headlines include rumblings of WWIII as Turkey shoots down a Russian jet and the US leadership seems to be asleep at the wheel.

We find ourselves at a point when so many just seem to have no reason to hope or believe in tomorrow being better than today. Especially the next generation! But lest you think it is only gloom and doom – there is hope!

As believers, we dare not buy into the attitude of despair and hopelessness no matter how widespread its’ influence. Especially if we want to be part of the next great move of God!

This week let’s examine how hope should impact our lives and how that same hope working in each of us can impact the lives of others. Let’s finish the week understanding how essential hope is in the lives of believers in the days ahead.

Do you need a pedicure?

Today's blog post is contributed by David Trotta:

And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” (Romans 10:15)

My wife, like many woman, is very fond of pedicures.  It’s very easy to spot when she has just returned from a pedicure.  Her feet look beautiful, especially with that fresh coat of nail polish.

She tries to go as often as possible with her daughters and friends.  At the risk of being judged by the men reading this blog, my wife has even dragged me along a few times, minus the toe nail painting of course!

There’s another way to make our feet beautiful – by bringing the good news of the Kingdom of Heaven to others.

As children of God, we are a gift to the nations sent to preach the good news of His kingdom. And preaching the good news doesn’t just come from our lips.  We also, and maybe even more importantly, proclaim the good news through our actions.

You and I hold in our possession a precious, life changing message about a King who gave His life so we could become citizens of His Kingdom.  Oh how beautiful we are to God when we carry that good news to others.

So, how beautiful are your feet in God’s eyes?  Does your lifestyle (words and actions) preach the good news to others on a daily basis?  If not, make a commitment today to start demonstrating the love of God to everyone you encounter.

Happy Thanksgiving

“I will praise God’s name in song

    and glorify him with thanksgiving.”

Psalm 69:30

“I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus.”

I Corinthians 1:4

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

Philippians 4:6

“give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

I Thessalonians 5:18

“Now, our God, we give you thanks,

    and praise your glorious name.”

I Chronicles 29:13

I am thankful for each of you as well and pray you be blessed today and every day as you serve the Lord Jesus Christ – Stephen

His Grace Remains Sufficient!

“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught,
and overflowing with thankfulness.”
Colossians 2:6-7

How did you receive Christ Jesus as Lord?
Was it through works or grace?
We know it was through His grace.
And that is how we are to continue to live our lives in Him.
With His continued grace applied to our lives.
It’s not by praying a sinner’s prayer and then returning to same-old, same-old.
When I plant a flower from seed it is not instantly rooted nor is it fully developed and fully grown.
Among other things, it takes time.
As time passes though, my need for His grace does not cease.
It is an essential ingredient in being rooted and built up in Him.
Try overflowing with thankfulness, as the scripture above tells us to be, without any on-going recognition and reliance on the grace of God.
If we rely on works, why do we need to thank God – after all it is our own effort that God us where we are!
That is the mindset that develops in one who may have started out by grace but then believes it is his or her effort that keeps them walking with the Lord.
The scripture teaches us that His grace is sufficient.
When we believe our works are what is keeping us we are instead declaring that His grace is deficient.
Thank Him for His work of grace in you.
Not just the day you committed your life to Him but also for the grace working in you today!

Recognize, Repent and Move On

“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.”
I John 1:8

Really?
They seem too crazy for anyone to believe and yet...
The lengths we go to in avoiding calling sin what it is – S-I-N.
Two recent headlines:
“Prince Charles: ‘Climate Change’ Root Cause of Syrian War.”
“Scientist Declared ‘Global Warming’ Caused Hitler.”
I am not writing today’s post to debate with anyone over the ‘merits’ or not of ‘global warming’ or the now more politically correct term ‘climate change’.
Rather, it is to point out how far we go to be politically correct when it comes to our spiritual well-being.
We have all these different ways of avoiding the truth that sin is sin.
Adultery is ‘an affair’.
We commit ‘white lies’ and call people ‘good witches’.
Those words roll off our tongue so much easier than the word ‘sin’.
This is not a post meant to condemn.
Rather it is calling each of us who are followers of Christ not to whitewash the sin in our own lives by labeling it as something else as if the ‘something else’ to try and make it more palatable and void of the need for repentance.
Did you sin today?
Confess it to God, repent and move forward.
We dance around what it is called so that we can avoid the painful part – repent – and when we do that we are at a standstill and not able to move forward in that area of our lives.
God knows what it is so why not be honest with Him and with yourself.
Jesus said to a certain woman –
Neither do I condemn you, go and sin no more.”
She did not attempt to deny or whitewash her sin.
As far as I know she didn’t try to blame it on climate change.
Let’s commit to being honest today and recognizing sin for what it is in our lives knowing that Jesus paid the penalty for our sin.
We need not whitewash it but we recognize, repent and move on!

Instead, Love

“At this they tried to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him, because his hour had not yet come. Still, many in the crowd believed in him. They said, “When the Messiah comes, will he perform more signs than this man?”
John 7:30-31

They say you should never talk religion or politics in certain places or at certain times.
The reason for that is that those topics can be divisive.
Our scripture today reveals that Jesus, by His presence, by His words and by His actions was also divisive.
He did not come to divide but when people, then or now, are confronted by Jesus they are forced to make a decision.
Will they be those who tried to seize Him or those who believed Him?
The same is true today.
Will you be one who determines to reject Jesus and remove Him from your life?
Or will you be one who believes in Him?
Jesus walks on the earth today through you and me if we are His followers.

When you allow your light to shine but are rejected for it, remember that it is Him that is being rejected and not you!
How should you respond?
Love them.
Rejection is painful.
Yet Jesus showed us How to love even through the rejection of others.
Don’t lash out.
Don’t get even.
Don’t even meditate on a slam or put down.
Instead, love.

Easy Target

Today's blog post is contributed by David Trotta:

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. (I Peter 5:8)

Lions will always look for a weak member of the pride to attack. They will look for prey that is slow, weak, away from the pack and alone.

Our spiritual enemy – Satan – operates in the same way.  He waits for times when we are discouraged and tired.  He waits for pressures of life to wear us down and leave us unprotected and vulnerable to attack.

It may be a period in our lives where we feel distant from God and the pleasures of this world are filling more and more of our time, energy and thoughts.  Maybe our prayer life has dwindled to an occasional, forced prayer in the morning.  It may be a time when desire to study God’s word becomes something “I’ll do tomorrow,” but tomorrow never comes.

During those times we can be most vulnerable to our enemy.  We can all go through periods like that in our walk with the Lord, but it is during those times that we need to be extra sober and alert.

When we hear the word sober, we often think of staying away from alcohol or drugs, but many things can be intoxicating.  We can be intoxicated by money, power, influence, lust.  All those things can dull our spiritual senses and keep us from clearly seeing traps set by the enemy.

So, how do we keep from being a prime target for the enemy?  First, make the renewing of your mind a priority.  If you are going to become intoxicated by anything, become intoxicated by the word of God.  Drink heavily from scripture.  The truths of God’s word will keep you alert and able to easily spot the snares of the enemy.

Secondly, develop transparent and lasting relationships with other Christ followers who will encourage you and cheer you on in your walk with the Lord.  Don’t stray away from the pack.  Have the back of other Christians and let them have your back.

Don’t be an easy target for the enemy.

An Inopportune Moment?

“A dispute also arose among them as to which of them
was considered to be greatest. Jesus said to them...”
Luke 22:24-25a

The disciples were having a spat!
A dispute!
Not just any disagreement, this was over which of them
would be considered the greatest!
We can all stand on this end of the narrative centuries later and pontificate about how wrong it was of them to be even having this argument but what I really want to capture is the timing of it all as well as Jesus’ response.
This conversation took place mere hours before Jesus’ arrest, crucifixion and death.
Talk about awful timing...
And yet Jesus patiently, lovingly turns this into one of the most important teaching moments for Peter, James, John and the others.
I have to admit – I probably would have lost it!
“I’m about to die and this is all you have to chatter about?!”
But not Jesus.
Instead His words include these:
But I am among you as one who serves.
These were not only words He spoke to teach them but they were also quite literally actions He was living out before them all at that very moment.
I am afraid my lesson plan would have been different and would have included anger and impatience.
But not Jesus.
He served them; in this case by gently teaching them, at a time we might
rightly expect that others should be ministering to Him!
How do you treat people at those times that you are facing great battles?
Do they feel the wrath of your stress and frustration or do you, even in the most difficult of times, reveal the Fathers’ love to them?
We wouldn’t blame Jesus if the next verse after the dispute had erupted said something like...and Jesus withdrew to a solitary place.
But it doesn’t and He didn’t!
Let His teaching moment to them be your homework challenge for today!

Foolish Thinking

“Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit,

are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?”

Galatians 3:3

You were saved by grace.

You are kept by grace.

We do not need to begin to ‘work’ to keep our salvation.

As we abide in the vine we bear fruit.

As we submit to the pruning of the Father we bear more fruit.

It is a relationship of Father and child and not one of boss and employee.

We are in Christ and Christ is in us.

Out of that union and relationship, born out of love, we bear fruit.

Is it possible to be saved by grace then believe we must continue by works?

Yes, but...

Paul called such thinking ‘foolish’!

Renewed thinking is not foolish thinking.

Renewed thinking understands that I cannot save myself no matter how ‘good’ or prolific my works might be.

Nor can good works lead my journey.

He must lead and as He does the fruit will be evident.

Don’t be stuck in foolish thinking!

Who’s Your Daddy?

‘For in him we live and move and have our being...we are His offspring’
Acts 17:28

I have some acquaintances whose sons seem to be exact reproductions of their father.
Walk into a room full of people and you would have absolutely no problem matching these boys up with their dad.
We, as followers of Jesus Christ, are Gods’ offspring.
We should ‘look’ like Him, we should ‘sound’ like Him and we should ‘behave’ like Him.
Do people know you are His offspring by your looks, your words and your behavior?
Do you live, move and have your being in Him?
Or do they scratch their head and say “Who’s your daddy?”
To be fair we are all a work in progress but even in a construction zone you should be able to see progress on the skyscraper as it is being built.
If I claim to be a child of God then as the years go by I should look more and more like my Father in heaven.
Do you love greater today than you did last year?
Is compassion more evident in your life now than it was in your past?
Are you growing in His grace or becoming a grumpy old man?
These are fair questions to challenge yourself with.
Can others ‘pick you out’ as God’s offspring?

The Final Word

“...All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me...”

Matthew 28:18

All power...

All authority...

Are Yours, are yours, are yours, are yours, are yours!

Those are words we declared as we worshipped Sunday.

If we believe those words then we must be also believe that God has the final word.

He has the final word when it comes to a terror attack in Paris.

He has the final word when it comes to the rise and fall of nations.

But He also has the final word when it comes to your life.

Sometimes it is easier to agree with Gods’ power and authority over a far-away land that it is to acknowledge or surrender to that same power and authority in our personal lives.

That is the intent of the words we pray

“...Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”

I certainly would never claim to improve on that prayer but I wonder if it might sometimes help us to remember the point if we prayed:

Thy will be done on earth through me as it is in heaven.

God wants to do His will through you today.

If He lives in you then His power and His authority are also in you to advance His Kingdom.

Let Him have the final word in your life today!

Moor of Jesus

Today's blog post is contributed by David Trotta:

Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. (Colossians 3:2)

The word “set” used in the above verse can also be translated as “anchored.”

Imagine a boat in stormy seas without an anchor.  With nothing to hold it in place, the boat is at the mercy of the storm and in great danger.  It could drift into unsafe waters, be slammed into rocks, even capsize.

Our minds are subject to the same dangers when they are not properly anchored.

We are instructed to “anchor” our mind on the things above (heavenward), not on things of this world.

The things of this world are temporal and passing away, but the things above are lasting and eternal.  Being spiritually minded will keep your feet firmly anchored on the path of righteousness, but being worldly minded will keep your feet anchored on a path of destruction.

When anchored to the world, my thoughts hold tight to the cares and desires of this world, but when anchored to the Kingdom of God, my thoughts hold tight to the cares and desires of my King.  One leads to a mindset that produces un-Christ like behavior, the other leads to a renewed mindset that produces Christ like behavior.

Moor is a term used in boating circles.  It means “to hold in place with an anchor.”

So, in other words, when your mind is anchored on things above, your life will reflect moor of Jesus.

More Near and Dear

Sharing some verses that have meant a lot to me over the years and
hoping they become near and dear to your heart as well.

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”

Joshua 1:8

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

 I John 1:9

“to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.

Jude 25

“Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen!

Luke 24:5b-6a

So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation”

II Corinthians 5:16-18

Be Blessed!

Near and Dear

Sharing some verses that have meant a lot to me over the years and
hoping they become near and dear to your heart as well.

“being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 1:6

“...I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
John 10:10

“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.
In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:
Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant,
being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.”
Philippians 2:3-11

“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers. Not so the wicked!
They are like chaff that the wind blows away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.”
Psalm 1

Follow After Jesus

“Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign,
went out to meet him.”
John 12:18

Have you read the verse above?
O.K, what’s your first question?
Let me guess: What was ‘this sign’ that the verse refers too?
Does it matter?
Maybe not as much as we think!
Hebrews 8:13 tells us:
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
Jesus was the same the day before the sign was performed.
Jesus was the same the day after the sign was performed.
For all of humanity the single most important question to ask is not what sign will Jesus perform for me but rather what will you do about Jesus Christ?
Signs can draw a crowd.
Sometimes a very large crowd.
It’s easy to become anonymous in a crowd.
It’s also very easy to be so absorbed in the signs and wonders that we miss the person of Jesus Christ and what He has done, and will do, in our lives.
Jesus called men to “Follow me.”
He never called them to follow the signs and wonders He performed.
Don’t get me wrong, I truly believe signs and wonders are to be part of what follows every believer.
But that is just it – they are what follow us and not what we follow after!
Follow after Jesus.
Still want to know what the sign was?
Read the chapter!

Jesus, Tired as He Was…

“So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar…and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.
When a Samaritan woman came to draw water,
Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?”
John 4:5-7

Jesus was tired from a long journey.
But He asked a woman for a drink of water.
His question was really more about drawing her into a conversation.
He was about to minister to her, and by extension, to the entire Samaritan town some might say He was just passing through
Yet there was purpose in every word Jesus spoke.
Today, for this Samaritan woman, was no exception.
Was Jesus tired?
Yes.
Did He allow that weariness to keep Him from being about His Father’s business?
No.
Sometimes our greatest opportunities to minister will present themselves at moments we may be tired from our ‘journey’.
For the sake of the person Jesus puts in your path, don’t let that fatigue rob you of pouring out what God has poured in for ‘such a time as this’.
There are always a million convenient reasons why returning that persons’ phone call can wait.
There are plenty of missed chances where we might say:
‘I’m sorry, can I catch up to you later?’ and then choose 40 winks over caring for a hurting person.
Certainly we all need rest and our Creator knows that.
But ministry isn’t all about ‘my convenience’.
It sometimes takes us out of the way and leads us into conversations when we might rather choose solitude.
Don’t miss the opportunities the Holy Spirit leads you to today!

I will to do Thy will

Today's post is contributed by David Trotta:

For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but to do the will of Him who sent Me. (John 6:38)

The bible teaches us that we can’t serve two masters.  We will grow to be devoted to one and despise the other (Matthew 6:24).

Who’s your master, God or self?  There’s an easy way to tell.  Answer the following question honestly…..When God’s will is at odds with your will, who wins?

Whoever wins out is a telltale sign of who rules your heart.  Whoever holds the place of greater importance will win out each time there is a conflict of wills.

Jesus came from heaven to do the will of the Father, not His own will.  He consistently denied himself, even to death on the cross, to ensure His Father’s will was done.  He focused on what pleased His Father, so His Father’s will always won out.

With Jesus as our example, we should have the same mindset. And, it’s not a one and done deal.  We will be faced with many decisions each day where we will have to choose between God’s will and our will.

How do we consistently choose God’s will?  We must work diligently on renewing our mind and developing our God-given mind of Christ (1 Corinthian 2:16).

We renew our mind by exchanging the inaccurate, flawed knowledge of the world system with the infallible truths of God’s word.  When we do that, we will begin to clearly see what the will of God is in every situation.

Then, like Jesus, through our words and actions, our lives will say “not my will, but thy will be done.”

“Dear Sir…”

“The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”
The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.”
Romans 8:15-16

We happen to be a family with one biological child and one adopted child.
Suppose we had required our adopted daughter to address us as
Mr. and Mrs. Brisson rather than as mom and dad.
Can you imagine how that relationship would develop over time?
To say the least it would be a formal, keep you at arms length, kind of home.
Not exactly a picture of an ideal family.
And yet, so often, that is how we view our relationship with our heavenly Father.
Rather than a dad who loves us beyond our understanding we often behave like He is some sort of ‘heavenly boss’ and we are merely His employees.
Romans 8:15 and 16 sets the record straight.
We are adopted into sonship.
Those verses, combined with Jesus’ parable of the Prodigal Son, reveal a poignant aspect of our relationship well worth remembering.
We are God’s children.
Not in some vague – I hope I am – mindset either!
The Spirit of God brings that awareness to us.
Day-by-day as you walk with Him let the Holy Spirit remind you of the Father’s love.
Remember, Jesus never taught the disciples to pray – “Dear Sir”
His lesson began – “Our Father…”

Like Minded

“…have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 2:5b

Was that Christ like behavior from you at the office today?
It wasn’t?
Did you notice the unspoken thoughts that preceded the behavior?
The point is this –
Until your ‘pre-Christ’ mindset is replaced with the mind of Christ your life will produce un-Christ like behavior.
So maybe it wasn’t an office.
Maybe it was at home, in the factory, at school or in the store.
The ‘mindset’ you have produces the behavior you deliver.
Mindset is defined as – an established systems of thoughts, values, beliefs and desires that have become a way of systematic thinking that produces your behavior.
In Jesus Christ we can actually see the mindset of the Father and the behaviors that mindset produced.
So often, in our desire to be like Jesus we try to model the behaviors without the renewed mindset.
That leads to frustration and a poor witness.
Our thoughts and our behaviors are connected and we cannot change behavior without first changing our mind.
We do not change it to any old wind or wave of doctrine.
We think on the same things Jesus thought about.
You will find those thoughts revealed throughout the scriptures.
You will find it in communion with Him!

A Tale of Two “I’s”

“Once you were alienated from God and were enemies
in your minds because of your evil behavior.”
Colossians 1:21

I am sure you have heard that old expression
“Don’t put the cart before the horse.”
Yet, that is precisely what we try to do when we convince ourselves that transformation in our lives comes through exerting our will to change our behavior and yet do nothing to renew our minds.
A renewed mind, like the horse, moves our behavior (the cart) to the desired destination.
That is why Paul wrote “…but be transformed by the renewing of your minds…”
He did not write “…but be transformed by changing your behavior…”
Make no mistake, it is God’s desire that we become transformed.
We are to look more and more like the image of His Son as we grow and mature in the faith.
But no matter how hard I try to exert my own strength in changing my behavior apart from a renewed mind it just won’t happen.
That reintroduces the capital “I” as in “I did it!”
Religion loves the capital “I” but relationship is particularly fond of the “I” as it is revealed in Galatians 2:20
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
Let the renewed mind complete its work in you, moving you from the proud “I” to the submitted “I” of Galatians 2:20

A New Way of Thinking

“for,
“Who has known the mind of the Lord
    so as to instruct him?”
But we have the mind of Christ.”
I Corinthians 2:16

If you are going to spiritually transform your soul then what you need to know is…you must exchange your old mindset for the new mindset of Christ.
Were you changed in an instant when you came to Christ?
Yes and No!
How’s that for an answer?
You were born again, you entered into eternal life.
But…you also entered into a process, a journey if you will, from the old man and his ways to the new man who is being changed from glory to glory into the image of Christ.
We are a work in progress.
The renewing of our minds that Paul speaks of in Romans is not instantaneous.
Nor is it accomplished with fairy dust and endless wishes.
It is a deliberate and intentional process that sometimes may seem painfully slow.
But the transformation God is after demands we renew our thoughts.
Renew them with what?
Old thoughts for new thoughts.
But what new thoughts?
Do I read the great philosophers or classic literature?
Do I steep myself in ‘higher’ leaning?
Are the ‘new thoughts’ found in ‘New Age’ thinking?
No to all of these.
Here is what the Word of God tells me:
“I gain understanding from your precepts;
therefore I hate every wrong path.”
Psalm 119:104
God’s Word renews my mind.
As I follow His Word my mind is renewed.
As my mind is renewed, as my thinking change; my behavior follows.
What a wonderful promise to hold on to!
