Cookie Cutters or Potters Wheel?
But now, Lord, You are our Father; We are the clay, and You our potter,
And all of us are the work of Your hand.
Isaiah 64:8
There is an old chorus we used to sing that went something like this:
"Have Thine Own Way Lord,
Have thine own way.
Thou art the potter, I am the clay.
Mold me and shape me after thy will,
While I am waiting, yielded and still."
Do you remember that oldie?
I got thinking about that today and how we, as believers, often have a propensity to choose the way of the cookie cutter rather than the Potters wheel. We think that we must behave and 'look' like that other person who we perceive to be spiritually mature or look to conform our words, actions and methods to what someone else has told us is the "right" way to 'do' ministry. We fail to understand God has made each of us unique. Our purposes, our call and the methods we use may not look exactly like those other persons, but that is o.k. as long as we are listening and obediently following the heart of the Father.
Samuel was not Elijah - Yet they were both used by God as His prophets.
David was uniquely David and not a Moses clone. Still, both were leaders to Gods' people.
Peter and Paul were quite different from one another - not merely that one was a fisherman while the other was a learned 'Pharisee's Pharisee!
Don't strive to be someone else. God has created you uniquely you. In all the history of man - there has only been one you! Your DNA and fingerprints attest to this!
The best thing you and I can do to honor God is to be exactly whom He has purposed you to be. Let go of cookie cutter Christianity and allow Him to mold you and make you uniquely His!
