“Let no foul or polluting language, nor evil
word nor unwholesome
or worthless talk [ever] come out of your mouth, but
only such [speech] as is good
and beneficial to the spiritual progress of others, as is fitting to the need
and the occasion, that it may be a blessing and give grace (God’s favor) to those who hear it.”
Ephesians 4:29 (Amplified)
Imagine swimming
in a sewage treatment plant!
Not very nice is
it?
Wouldn’t it be
much better to swim in pristine waters off a golden beach?
That would be
refreshing, relaxing and enjoyable.
But
refreshing,
relaxing and enjoyable are hardly the adjectives you would use to describe
swimming in sewage!
We looked
yesterday at the fact that our words can be poison or fruit; bringing death or
life.
As ludicrous as
it might sound to swim in a sewage plant, it is equally unbelievable that we
would subject another person to that experience by speaking a ‘flood’ of toxic,
venomous words to them.
Or, imagine
someone creating that cesspool with their own tongue and then jumping in themselves!
Scripture is
even more graphic in declaring that we will ‘eat the fruit’ our tongue creates.
Do my own words
nourish me (and others) or are they like a slow poison?
As surely as swimming
around in a sewage treatment plant would be hazardous to my health; so speaking
life giving words would refresh, strengthen and build up my spirit.
I know this may
not present a very pretty ‘picture’ today but the truth is, our words, even
when we try to dress them up, can be very destructive.
The good news is
they can also be very constructive.
My son has a
very ‘corny’ sense of humor.
He got it from me.
Growing up and
hearing me long enough began to rub off on him.
So it is with
our words.
We sound a lot
like those we hang out with?
Do your words
reflect time spent with Jesus, or…
