“But when he,
the Spirit of truth, comes,
he will guide
you into all the truth.
He will not
speak on his own;
he will speak
only what he hears,
and he will tell you what is yet to come.”
John 16:13
Years ago our
family took a trip to the Gettysburg Battlefield.
While there we
purchased a cassette tape that, when played,
served as an in-car tour guide and
‘GPS’ through the battlefield.
Those who wanted to and could afford it could take
it one step further by
actually hiring a personal tour guide to be in the car
with you.
This added a few
benefits, not the least of which was being able to interact
with the guide
asking and having questions answered,
hearing personal stories, perhaps even
having historical sites or
facts pointed out that would not be included on the
cassette.
Our walk with
God is like that too.
He gives us His
eternal word.
Of course that is
infinitely more valuable than any cassette tape.
But then He
takes it one step further.
He puts His Holy
Spirit in us and alongside us.
His Spirit
guides us into all truth.
We have the
ultimate ‘tour guide’ to the Kingdom of God!
Imagine the lost
opportunity if someone hired a tour guide in Gettysburg and then failed to
engage in conversation with him.
He is poured out
on us for far more than pointing out signposts along the way.
Jesus told us
that the Spirit of Truth, God’s Holy Spirit would testify of Him.
