If Heaven Assigned Homework

“Then Jehoiada placed the oversight of the temple of the Lord in the hands of the Levitical priests, to whom David had made assignments in the temple, to present the burnt offerings of the Lord as written in the Law of Moses, with rejoicing and singing, as David had ordered.”
II Chronicles 23:18

If heaven assigned homework what do you suppose it would be?
Would it consist of math problems and writing assignments?
If there is a heavenly homework assignment I think it would have to be all about love.
Love others as you are loved.
Love those not easily loved by others.
Love the one who cannot or will not love in return.
But even those last three sentences can be vague and fail to motivate us to action.
What if the ‘heavenly homework’ was more specific?
What if there were very tangible, very concrete assignments?
That is how we were challenged this week.
We were given opportunities over the next 40 days to show the love of God in six different ways in our community.
It is not homework that is handed in for a score.
It is homework intended to teach us to love in deed and not with words only.
We are good at talking the talk but failing to walk the walk!
The challenge is meant to mobilize a church which can become comfortably immobile.
Instead of couch potatoes we become pew potatoes.
Same potato – different location.
Ouch!
So get off the couch or the pew and love in Jesus’ name!
