“Listen to my cry,
for I am in desperate need;”
Psalm 142:6a
Desire scratches
the surface.
Desperation gets
to the root!
Desire wants an
answer.
Desperation gets
an answer!
While desire
seeks results, desperation gets them.
A story of desire:
Just then a man
came up to Jesus and asked,
“Teacher, what
good thing must I do to get eternal life?”
“Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus
replied.
“There is only
One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.”
“Which ones?” he
inquired.
Jesus replied,
“‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you
shall not give false testimony,
honor your
father and mother,’ and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’”
“All these I
have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?”
Jesus answered,
“If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and
you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
When the young
man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.
Then Jesus said
to his disciples,
“Truly I tell
you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 19:
17-23
A story of desperation:
And a woman was
there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years,
but no one could
heal her.
She came up
behind him and touched the edge of his cloak,
and immediately
her bleeding stopped.
“Who touched me?” Jesus asked.
When they all
denied it, Peter said,
“Master, the
people are crowding and pressing against you.”
But Jesus said,
“Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me.”
Then the woman,
seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In
the presence of all the people,
she told why she
had touched him and how she had been instantly healed.
