Undignified Praise!

“When David returned home to bless his household, Michal daughter of Saul came out to meet him and said, “How the king of Israel has distinguished himself today, going around half-naked in full view of the slave girls of his servants as any vulgar fellow would!”

David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the Lord’s people Israel—I will celebrate before the Lord. I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor.”

II Samuel 6:20-22

David took some heat on the home front.

His wife didn’t appreciate what she determined was an undignified way for the King to behave!

What had David done?

He danced in celebration as the ark of the Lord was brought into the City of David.

Funny how some despise any animated worship expressed sincerely toward God and yet have no issue with going crazy for their favorite sports team.

One who worships the Creator of the universe who loves you with unimaginable love is far more worthy of our praise than anything else we could bow down too.

Do you let others control your worship or, like David, are you willing to become “...even more undignified...” as you lavish praise to the Lord?

We always speak of peer pressure in relation to young people but perhaps there is no greater stronghold of peer pressure than in many churches.

David was willing to be humiliated in his own eyes as he offered up praise and worship to the Lord.

Are you?

We are quick to answer yes...until others eyes are on us.

Their cold stares penetrate much like Michal’s words of disdain for her husband King David.

Can you declare with David – “I will celebrate before the Lord.”
