Pedigree Won’t Help

“When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah,
he sent his disciples to ask him,
“Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”
Matthew 11:2-3

How far back can you trace your roots?
Can you go back a generation?
How about several generations?
Can your family show ties to royalty or perhaps the Founding Fathers?
John the Baptist had a pretty important role to play as one who heralded the arrival of the Messiah.
He was not only cousin to Jesus but also the very one who baptized the Lamb of God.
Some might consider those downright impressive credentials
Despite his ‘background’ and despite his ‘pedigree’ John still found himself in prison.
In that prison, he had time to think.
And that thinking was sometimes pretty clouded.
Was his cousin, Mary and Joseph’s son, really THE ONE?
Why the sudden confusion?
The bible tells us that it was when he heard about the deeds of the Messiah that he sent his disciples to question Jesus.
Do the ‘deeds’ of God sometimes confuse or offend you?
Do the things that God does sometimes not fit perfectly into the profile your own mind has created for Him?
When that happens, what do you do?
You see, it really didn’t matter if John grew up with Jesus.
It didn’t matter that he saw the dove and heard the voice from heaven that day at the Jordan River.
It didn’t even matter that his life and ministry were dedicated to God.
There still came a time when he had to trust God to be God,
even when it didn’t make sense.
If you haven’t faced that same test, you will.
God may surprise you, He may offend you, He may even confuse you.
When that happens don’t lose sight of the truth that He is still God.
