“Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him,
went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”
“Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied.
“I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was
standing there with them.) When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and
fell to the ground.”
John 18:4-6
This was perhaps the best moment Jesus had to escape
from those who had come to arrest Him.
After all, He had slipped away on other occasions when
they tried to seize Him.
But this time was different.
Though the opportunity presented itself, Jesus did not
take it.
You see, the fullness of time had come for Jesus to
fulfill the Father’s purpose.
That is what made the difference – obedience and a
desire to please His Father!
The timing mattered now because obedience to His
Father mattered.
Jesus discerned the hour.
He did not try to escape – though He had before.
What would you have done?
Would you have seen this opportunity as Gods’ hand of
deliverance and made your way of escape in the moment or would you have seen it
for what it was, a choice between self-preservation or surrender.
Jesus chose surrender – what will you choose?
