“Now Moses was tending
the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the
flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.
Exodus 3:1
I am not sure
what a ‘typical’ day is for a shepherd but Exodus 3:1 does not lead us to believe
that this day, for Moses, was any different than most other days.
For Jethro’s
son-in-law it was a typical day, with typical duties for a man living a typical
shepherd’s life.
But the humdrum
was interrupted by a curious sight that Moses had to investigate.
His natural
work-a-day world was about to change.
Most of us know
the rest of the story about the burning bush, Moses’ commission, and how God
used him to confront the Pharaoh of Egypt.
Look back again
at Exodus 3:1.
We don’t find
Moses engaged in spectacular miracles or great exploits for God.
He was
faithfully tending the flocks of his father-in-law.
How exciting.
But then, being
faithful wherever God has you right now isn’t always the most exciting thing is
it?
We live for the
burning bush experience.
We crave the
opportunity to plant a stone in the giants’ head.
We wait
expectantly for the Archangel Gabriel to deliver his message from God to us.
But the only
bushes we see are filled with thorns and prickers.
The giants
intimidate us and make us run away and Gabriel seems to have misplaced our
address!
God met Moses
while he was tending the flock.
He was
faithfully engaged in a pretty unimpressive task.
Maybe we haven’t
had that encounter with God we desire because we have despised the
opportunities He presents for us to be faithful in the little things.
Moses was
tending the flock.
Gideon was
hiding from the Midianites.
Hannah was
mistaken for being drunk as she prayed.
David was on an
errand for his father.
Nope, can’t say
that any of that sounds ‘supernatural’.
But each met God
while faithfully carrying out their duties.
How about you?
Are you faithful
in the smallest, most menial task?
Or do you
consider those things beneath the GREAT man or woman of God that everyone must
appreciate that you are?
Be faithful.
He is!
