“know that a person is not justified by the works of
the law,
but by faith in Jesus Christ.
So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we
may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law,
because by the works of the law no one will be
justified.”
Galatians 2:16
If we had to distill down the message of Galatians to only
one verse then this verse would well summarize the message of the letter and
the Gospel.
We are saved by Jesus Christ alone and not by keeping
the works of the law. Paul had to remind the Galatians in his day and it is a
reminder we still need today.
We want to do
something.
Surely it must require more than just simply
believing?
Trust in the finished work of Jesus Christ is a
foundational truth of our faith.
It is something we must understand.
It is something our subsequent actions agree with.
Our trust in that truth is to be lived out in our
daily life.
The conditional requirements of a faith not based on
Christ alone may change through the generations but the fallacy of its theology
remains the same.
It is the grace of God through the work of the cross
and not our own efforts that save us.
No matter how religious or pious they appear!
