God Doesn’t Make Resolutions

“Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion endures through all generations.
The Lord is trustworthy in all he promises
and faithful in all he does.”
Psalm 145:13

If you are like many people, you made some resolutions yesterday.
If you are like most people, you broke those resolutions today!
Perhaps you are strong willed and, by sheer force of exercising that strong will, you won’t break that resolution until tomorrow or the day after that.
That’s the problem with all of our resolutions, sooner or later, they are broken.
Never mind how ‘sacred’ or ‘holy’ we might consider our resolutions.
Even the best of us struggle with this.
God doesn’t make resolutions.
At least not as we know them.
He makes promises.
And His promises are kept.
We sometimes have trouble believing this because our personal history is so different.
We make and break promises much like we make and break New Years’ resolutions.
The Psalmist declared that God is trustworthy in all He promises.
His promises are sure.
As we begin 2014 I encourage you to hold onto the promises of God.
He does not promise one day only to back pedal the next.
We can hold onto those promises with confidence and assurance.
Let me give you a couple to start your year…

“Sustain me, my God, according to your promise, and I will live;
do not let my hopes be dashed.”
 Psalm 119:116
“Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the
Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.”
Acts 2:33
