“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to
proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set
the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Luke
4:18-19
These words read by Jesus would be literally fulfilled by Him in
His ministry. As you work your way through the Gospel’s note how/when Jesus:
• proclaims
Good News to the poor
• proclaims
freedom for the prisoner
• recovery
of sight to the blind
• when
He sets the oppressed free
• proclaim
the year of the Lord’s favor
As you do, you will find that over and over Jesus fulfills the
words of the verses above which He had quoted from the Prophet Isaiah. To be sure He also harsh words for many of
the religious leaders and their hypocrisy but for the crowds who brought him their
blind, sick and desperate, He healed them all while also sharing the Good News
of the Kingdom. His ministry was,
in many ways, a model for us. We too can fulfill the prophetic mandate from Isaiah. Jesus did not go about doing good without
modeling for His Apostles and by extension for us what ministry to others
should look like.
