And having disarmed
the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over
them by the cross. (Colossians 2:15)
Have you ever watched one of those scenes in a movie where
a person is holding up a bank or robbing a store and he puts his finger in his
coat pocket to create the illusion he has a gun, but in reality he is unarmed?
Our adversary, the devil, uses this same tactic. He tries to create the illusion to make us
believe he is armed, but in reality he has been stripped of all his power and
authority. He is forever disarmed!
All he has left is to resort to trickery and
deception. For example, he may deceive us
into believing that a sin we are struggling with is too difficult to
break. Or, he may get us to focus on our
weaknesses and failures to discourage us from walking the path God set before
us. Or, he may try and convince us that
we are not worthy to be loved by a God whose love is unconditional and
unmerited.
The next time you are struggling to walk victoriously
remind yourself that Jesus forever broke the power over sin and death at the
cross (1 Corinthians 15:57) and it is not reversible. We are forever free.
Satan is a toothless lion with no bite left. The gun he is carrying in his pocket is an
illusion. The only power he has is what humanity (you and I) give back to him.
But, if we choose to walk in the victory God provided for
us, we honor Him, and through our lives, He will continue to make a public
spectacle of the foe He defeated.
