“Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that
you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped
and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky
as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the
day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain.”
Philippians 2:14-16
It seems that something new to the last hundred years
is that we like to ‘name’ our generations.
Baby Boomers and Generation X come to mind first.
Look again at today’s verse and you will discover that
it is not new.
Paul spoke of a warped and crooked generation in his
day.
Today we would be so easily offended by such a label
and would fall right into the pattern Paul spoke of.
We would grumble and argue about it!
There is little left to the imagination that we are
not offended by.
Look and listen and before long you will hear of this
or that ‘group’ who ‘grumble’ and ‘argue’ that they have not been treated
fairly.
We, as believers, are no different.
We have raised our flag up the pole of ‘our right not
to be offended’ and unfurled it loudly to be sure that the world hears us.
But adding our voice to the clamor already out there
is not what we are called to do.
Paul says we will “...shine among them like stars in the
sky...” when we do this...
“...hold firmly to the word of life.”
Let our pattern
of life – that is you and me living in the world blameless and pure because of
Christ in us – be the most effective witness to todays warped and crooked
generation.
We are not called to be warped and crooked but
blameless and pure.
Something to think about...
